Stop Managing and Start Leading

In this weeks blog I will be discussing a Tedx talk presented by Hamza Khan. In this talk Khan discusses his previous experiences working under managers and how he struggled with fitting into the traditional molds. He goes on to explain the difference between being a manager, and being a leader.

I found his opinion on this subject to be eye opening. I felt that much of what he said I also feel the same about. Khan explains the “management paradox” which is that growing organizations require management, but people don’t like to be managed. His solution has been to not manage people but rather lead people and help them help him and his business.

This reminds me of servant leadership which I believe is a great leadership style. Like all leadership styles it has its draw backs. however, I believe today’s workplace and workforce better suits a servant leadership style to the more traditional leadership mentality. This being that the companies goals come before its employees. I just cant agree with that style of management.

One quote from Khan that sums up his speech well is “you manage things, and you lead people”

  1. I couldn’t agree more. I also love servant leadership and wish that it was implemented more. I feel that this TED talk is one that I’d like to model part of my leadership style afterward and wish that others would do the same. I liked the reference to Mazlo’s and the idea that you lead out of love. That is ultimately the idea. I appreciate you sharing this and look forward to sharing it myself.
